15th October 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of Tom Phillis winning F.I.M. Road Racing 125cc World Championship title at Argentina.
Born in Sydney, April 1934, Tom Phillis grew up in Marrickville and from an early age loved racing. After beginning on pushbikes, he later graduated to motorcycles, but soon Tom was wanting to stretch his wings further. Once he had saved up enough money he ventured overseas to try his hand with the Continental Circus as a privateer.
In another part of the world, a Mr Soichiro Honda had also set his sights firmly on the world stage.
Within a few years their paths converged and a timely partnership came to fruition when Tom earned Honda's first win in a World Championship Grand Prix at Montjuich Park in Spain, and later that year, their first 125cc World Championship in 1961.
